Work out the right hutch dimensions for one or two rabbits. Compare 4ft, 6ft and XXL hutches, plus welfare rules, depth, height and run access.

Quick answer

For a single average rabbit, choose a hutch at least 6ft (180cm) long, 2ft (60cm) deep and 2ft (60cm) tall, with a covered sleeping area and access to a run. For two rabbits, go longer or add a permanent run rather than squeezing them into a 4ft hutch. If you cannot offer a run, treat 6ft as the minimum, not the target.

Why hutch length, depth and height all matter

Length gives a rabbit room to hop and stretch, but depth decides whether it can turn around and lie down without touching both walls. Height lets it stand upright on hind legs and use a shelf or ramp without bumping its head. A hutch that is long but shallow, or tall but narrow, still restricts natural movement.

Measure the space where the hutch will stand before you buy. A 6ft hutch needs a 6ft footprint plus clearance for roof overhangs and for opening doors. If the hutch has no legs, it is designed for a grass or patio area, so check the surface is level and safe from digging.

How to compare 4ft, 6ft and XXL hutches

A 4ft double-decker hutch can suit a single small rabbit if it has a full-height lower run and daily exercise, but it is tight for a bonded pair. A 6ft hutch gives noticeably more length and is the safer baseline for most owners. XXL models go further, with some reaching 180cm long including roof overhangs and 70cm deep including front and back overhangs.

When a listing quotes length or depth 'including roof overhangs', the usable internal space is smaller than the headline number. Ask for internal dimensions if the difference matters to you, and compare like with like rather than assuming two 6ft hutches offer the same floor area.

Welfare, wire and weather protection

Welfare-approved hutches are built around secure wire, easy cleaning and protection from damp and predators. Look for coated wire rather than thin standard mesh, slide-out or metal-lined trays, and opening roofs or hinged panels that let you reach every corner. Raised feet or plastic feet keep the timber off wet ground and reduce rot.

If foxes are a concern in your area, check whether fox-resistant wire is standard or an optional upgrade. A hutch that is predator-resistant but too small still fails the rabbit, so treat security and space as separate checks on the same purchase.

Hutch size for two rabbits and indoor setups

Two rabbits need enough room to move past each other without a dead end. A single 6ft hutch with a ramp and a lower play area can work for a bonded pair if they also get a run. If they are large breeds, or if one is elderly and less mobile, choose the longest and deepest option you can fit and keep the ramp gentle.

Indoor rabbits still need a hutch or enclosure of the same dimensions, plus a safe floor covering. In both indoor and outdoor setups, the hutch is the sleeping and shelter zone, not the whole living space. Plan the run or exercise area at the same time as the hutch so the rabbit is never confined to the hutch alone.

Decision rules for choosing a hutch size

  • One average rabbit, with daily run access: A 6ft hutch such as the Shadow XL or a welfare-compliant two-tier model gives enough length and height. Check depth as well as length before buying. If the hutch is 6ft but under 50cm deep, keep looking for a deeper model.
  • Two rabbits or a large breed: Choose the longest and deepest hutch you can fit, or pair a 6ft hutch with a permanent run. The Shadow XXL's 180cm length and 70cm depth including overhangs is the roomier option here. Do not put a bonded pair in a 4ft hutch, even a double-decker one.
  • Small rabbit, tight space, run available: A 4ft double-decker such as the Classic XL Grey can work if the lower run area is equal to the upper area and the rabbit gets daily exercise outside the hutch. Treat this as a minimum, not a comfortable long-term size.
  • Predator pressure or exposed garden: Prioritise coated or fox-resistant wire, raised or plastic feet, and a hutch that can be moved or sheltered. Optional wire upgrades are worth the extra cost if foxes visit. Security and size are separate checks; a secure hutch can still be too small.

Hutch options and what their dimensions mean

  • THUMPER DELUXE XL Rabbit Hutch – Welfare Standard Approved: The THUMPER DELUXE XL Rabbit Hutch is a two-tier, welfare-compliant home with 3mm coated wire, slide-out trays, opening roofs and rot-free feet. The two tiers add usable floor area without a longer footprint, and the trays and opening roofs make routine cleaning much faster.
  • Shadow XXL Grey Rabbit Hutch: The Shadow XXL Grey Rabbit Hutch is 180cm long including roof overhangs on both sides and 70cm deep including front and back overhangs, with optional 3mm fox-resistant wire. The extra depth gives larger rabbits room to turn and lie down, while the optional fox-resistant wire is worth adding if predators are a local risk.
  • Shadow XL Rabbit Hutch: The Shadow XL Rabbit Hutch is a 6ft (180cm long x 53cm deep x 85cm high) two-floor hutch with no legs, designed for grass areas, and offers optional 3mm fox-proof wire. It suits a lawn or patio position, but the 53cm depth is tighter than the XXL, so it is better for average-sized rabbits than for large breeds.
  • CLASSIC XL GREY 2 TIER RABBIT HUTCH: The CLASSIC XL GREY 2 TIER RABBIT HUTCH is 122cm long x 45cm deep x 89cm high, with a lower run area equal to the upper area, metal-lined trays, a wooden back, two wire sides and plastic feet. The equal upper and lower areas plus plastic feet make it a practical starter hutch for one small rabbit, but the 4ft length and 45cm depth are below what a pair needs.

Is a large hutch the right choice for you?

Best for

  • Owners with a 6ft or larger footprint available, including clearance for overhangs and doors
  • Bonded pairs or large-breed rabbits that need depth as well as length
  • Gardens where foxes or bad weather make coated or fox-resistant wire a priority

Not for

  • Buyers who can only offer a 4ft footprint and no run, who should reconsider the setup before buying
  • Indoor owners who need a furniture-style enclosure rather than an outdoor hutch
  • Anyone who cannot keep the hutch dry, raised and predator-secure in their chosen position
